Nearby is Whelans Pub which is situated in the picturesque village of Stradbally.  It was built in the 1800's and was used by the Mercy Nuns for some years as a convent.  James Whelan leased the business afterwards from the Beresford Family and ran it as a hotel.  James's son Patrick and his wife Bridget purchaed the property in 1932 and continued to run it as a hotel for many years.
Patrick's son James(Jimmy) later took over and ran it as a pub and grocery store for the next 50 years.  On his retirement the pub passed to his son John and wife Caroline.  They run the business as a pub and Tea Room to this very day.  It is simple, clean, friendly and a great place to stop off.
The pub has thus been run by the Whelan Family in an unbroken line for almost two hundred years.  There is a lovely enclosed Beer Garden, a joy on those balmy summer days or for the smoker.  There is a sandy beach here with cliff-top walks and a number of little sandy coves nearby.
